THE ISSUE
Studying abroad can leave a profound impact on students. However, the process of searching for and applying to colleges can be overwhelming due to numerous options, varying admissions policies, credential evaluation requirements, unfamiliarity with U.S. writing standards, language barriers, narrow timelines, and lack of preparation. Navigating immigration laws and the visa application process adds another layer of complexity. Additionally, the excitement of arriving on campus is often followed by the pressures of meeting academic expectations, understanding immigration procedures, finding employment, establishing cross-cultural relationships, and integrating into the campus community. It is common for international students to experience feelings of anxiety, loneliness, failure, and helplessness. Research shows that providing support mechanisms and coping strategies for international students is crucial for their well-being and success.
REGIONAL FOCUS
Our focus is on assisting international students from Africa, the motherland, rich in culture, tradition, and academic talent, especially those from the Sub-Saharan region. U.S. studies have shown that these students often face higher levels of loneliness, discrimination, and financial stress while studying in the United States. This is partly due to currency volatility in their home country, social stigma, and negative coping strategies. Despite being home to many academically talented students and a population with a young median age, Africa is underrepresented in the U.S. international student statistics.
Yet, Africa is one of the fastest-growing continents, with the United Nations estimating that by 2050, at least 25% of the global workforce will be from Africa. In the coming decade, many African countries are expected to experience substantial economic growth, leading to an expanding middle class. As a result, more families will become interested in sending their children overseas for a high-quality college education.
We have worked directly with these students and believe in their immense potential to bring about structural change in their home communities and to enrich the cultural fabric of the United States. This will bring new awareness and value to African diasporic narratives and African cultural artifacts and media. This vision comes true with each student we assist. We strive to serve a diverse African clientele representing different national, cultural, linguistic, economic, and academic backgrounds.
